In meetings and discussions with with nonprofit staff and leaders across our portfolios, as well as at the Cross Portfolio Workshop we held in the Summer of 2016, one topic that kept arising was how nonprofit organizations located in the Bay Area compare in salary and benefits. Since we heard an interest from numerous grantees, we decided to do some digging into this topic with the goal to collect data on benefits and salaries for Bay Area nonprofits that could be useful when organizations evaluate and update their policies and programs.
We conducted a survey asking nonprofit organizations headquartered or with branches in the Bay Area about their current practices and policies. There were 79 responses to the survey, 30 of which were Peery Foundation grantees (14 from our Local Portfolio, 12 from Regional, and 4 from Global). Thank you to everyone who contributed to this project.
Other sources consulted were the Fair Pay for Northern California Nonprofits 2016 Compensation & Benefits Survey Report, Fair Pay for Northern California Nonprofits 2017 Compensation & Benefits Survey Report, 2016 GuideStar Nonprofit Compensation Report, and Charity Navigator 2016 CEO Compensation Study.
Our hope is that our grantees and other Bay Area nonprofits alike can use the information gathered here as a resource when reflecting on and updating their organization’s salary and benefits policies.
